Preschool For All screenings will be held for children ages 3 and 4 years old on Thursday, April 27, from 8:30AM-2:00PM and Friday, April 28, from 8:30AM-12:00PM at the Williamsville Christian Church in Williamsville.  Children must be 3 years old or turn 3 by April 15, 2017.  There will be another screening in August for children who will turn 3 from April 16-September 1.  Screenings will last 30-45 minutes.  Children will be screened on fine/gross motor skills, speech/language skills, developmental concepts, and vision/hearing.  To schedule an appointment for your child, please call Sherman Elementary at 496-2021 beginning Monday, March 27 between 8:30 AM-3:00 PM.  In order to be screened, you MUST bring the following items: 

  • Proof of residency (even if there is a sibling in our district)
  • A current physical AND shot record
  • An official county certified birth certificate (available at the Sangamon County building)

Dear 2017-18 Kindergarten parent,  

Welcome to the beginning of an exciting adventure-the start of your child’s elementary school education! We at Sherman Elementary are pleased to be a part of this moment and look forward to discussing how we can work together with you to best support your child’s development.

This upcoming school year, Sherman Elementary is pleased to announce the possibility of an exciting program called PreK5, which will be open to children turning 5 years old by September 1, 2017. This program will be a bridge between preschool and kindergarten that will give children whose birthdays fall late in the year an opportunity to learn important academic and social skills in a hands-on way that supports their development. We are asking ALL parents of incoming kindergarten students to participate in an interest survey regarding this type of program.  Please visit https://goo.gl/forms/ze923SzSRoULa1CA2 to take the 12 question survey.  We ask that you complete the survey by Friday, March 17, 2017.  To be considered for the PreK5 program, parents must pre-register their child.  Regardless of program availability, we are asking all parents to pre-register their kindergarten age eligible child so that we can plan accordingly with our staff needs.

*Disclaimer: In order for the district to hold the PreK5 Program, a minimum of 12 students must be enrolled each year.

This is important because kindergarten standards and curriculum have changed over the years, and many of the skills children were once taught in first grade are now expected in kindergarten. PreK5 is a wonderful new option that will allow families to give their children the gift of time to develop at their own pace and continue building the social, emotional and academic skills that will help them succeed in elementary school.

Using a unique, specialized curriculum based on the kindergarten standards, the PreK5 teacher will help children develop social skills through activities that build confidence and communication. They will expose children to reading and math in an exciting, interactive way.  The students will be using educational games to learn about words and sentences and to help them understand mathematical concepts like counting and patterns. The social, emotional and academic skills children learn in Pre-K 5 will help them succeed in kindergarten, become leaders in the classroom and confidently navigate the school day routine.

2017-18 Kindergarten Pre-registration

          Kindergarten pre-registration for the 2017-2018 school year is underway.  Parents are encouraged to come to the elementary office from 8:00 am-3:00 pm any day to pre-register their kindergarten age eligible child. It is extremely important in our planning for the next school year to have an accurate count of kindergarten students.

If you live in the Williamsville School District and have a child (or children) who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2017, please plan on pre-registering your child.  If at all possible (but not necessary to pre-register), please bring the following items with you:

ashbaughThe second graders had a Skype visit with children's book author Steve Metzger. He read his book, The Silly Turkey Party to them, and talked to them about what it takes to become an author. He answered lots of questions and was a pleasure to meet! 

 

 

 

Once again the communities of Sherman and Williamsville never fail to amaze! On October 26, Sherman Elementary and Sherman County Market came together to collect non-perishable food items for the local food pantry. On Friday, November 13, the students and staff of Sherman Elementary had collected 250 items. Mrs. Lindsey challenged the students to collect 350 items by November 20. The students took the challenge and surpassed it. On Friday, November 20, County Market delivered 560 non-perishable food items to the local food pantry!! Earlier this week, the food pantry had to shut down due to no food. With today's donation, the doors are open once again! Thanks so much for being such caring communities!

What do you do when your marker runs out? You should Colorcycle it! When you recycle your markers this way they go back to Crayola and get turned into plastic materials instead of going into landfills.  You can recycle all kinds of markers even if it is not Crayola! You can recycle dry erase markers, Sharpies, highlighters, and more! Look for a box in elementary classrooms or the Sherman Elementary office to put your markers in. Crayola will pay the postage for us to ship the old markers to them for recycling. We thank you for your support and for helping donate these markers to Crayola!

Students in Mrs. Kluemke's 4th grade class are starting a Colorcyle Marker Recycling program. They  created posters and wrote articles for newsletters to let people know about this program and they even spoke on the morning announcements about it at the elementary school. They created drop boxes for classrooms where students can put their old markers for donation. Crayola will pay to ship these markers to their recycling facility. These students are excited to find a new way to cut down on items going to landfills.

Sherman Elementarys 2015 2016 Goal
Each year the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois invites schools to participate in their Pop Tab Challenge.  This will be the 5th year Sherman Elementary has entered the Challenge.  Each year the students, families and community members have saved and sent in their aluminum tabs to Sherman Elementary, and each year the total pounds collected has increased.   We have gone from 39.6 pounds our first year to 179 pounds this past year, and our goal for 2015-2016 is 200 pounds.  Sherman Elementary recently dropped off their first donation of Pop Tabs for this year, weighing a total of 79.6 pounds.  Way to go, we are off to a GREAT START!!!

The pop tabs help bring in about $10,000 annually for the RMH budget, so you can see those little aluminum tabs really add up.

The Ronald McDonald House serves and sustains families when catastrophe strikes the most cherished part of their lives - their children.  They provide a supportive home away from home for as many as fourteen families at a time, with nine nights being the average length of stay.  However, it is not uncommon for a family to stay as long as six to nine months. 

Sherman Elementary is proud to once again partner with the Ronald McDonald House by entering the Pop Tab Challenge.  Please continue to save and send in your pop tabs for the 2015-2016 Pop Tab Challenge.  The Challenge ends in early May so keep them coming!!
